Pretend Gun Play in Preschool

Let’s talk about something that often catches educators off guard…

A child picks up a block, points it, and says, “BANG!” while pointing it at another child.

Many if not most programs have strict rules against gun play. You might be expected to stop it right away.

But here’s the hard part: this kind of play is extremely common—and deeply meaningful.

Children aren’t glorifying violence. They’re often trying to make sense of fear, safety, friendship, and power. What we see as “challenging behavior” might actually be symbolic play that needs support and guidance, not consequences.

👉 I’m opening up a conversation about how we respond to this type of play.
I’d love to hear what comes up for you when pretend gun play shows up in your classroom.

How do you respond?

📝 Come join me in the comments—I want to hear your experience, even (especially!) if your setting doesn’t allow this kind of play.
